Last month, during the week of our 2026 State of the Town Address, the Town of Dumfries had the distinct honor of welcoming Honorable Millicent Amankwah, Member of Parliament of Ghana and representative in the ECOWAS Parliament.
Her visit provided an opportunity to showcase our community, share our vision for the future, and explore how relationships between communities—no matter how far apart geographically—can create opportunities that benefit people on both sides of the Atlantic.
I often say that our goal is to transform Dumfries from a place people drive through into a destination people choose.
Achieving that vision requires more than infrastructure projects and economic development initiatives. It requires relationships, partnerships, and a willingness to think beyond our borders.
That is why this visit mattered.
Throughout her time in Dumfries, we discussed topics that are important to communities everywhere:
We also had the opportunity to share the story of Dumfries—our transformation, our momentum, and our belief that small towns can accomplish extraordinary things when they have a clear vision and the courage to pursue it.
One of the greatest lessons I have learned in leadership is that opportunities often begin with relationships.
Before there is an investment, there is a conversation. Before there is a partnership, there is trust. Before there is progress, there are people willing to build bridges.
The visit of Honorable Amankwah represented the beginning of one of those bridges.
As Mayor, I believe our residents should know that the story of Dumfries is reaching far beyond Virginia. Leaders from other communities, states, and even other nations are taking notice of what is happening here.
This visit also reminded us of an important truth: in today's world, even small towns can have an international impact.
While our conversations are still in the early stages, I am encouraged by the possibilities for future collaboration in areas such as economic development, cultural exchange, tourism, and youth leadership.
The work we are doing in Dumfries is opening doors to relationships that can create value for generations to come. Our vision may be local, but our connections can be global.
And that is why I remain optimistic about the future of Destination Dumfries. Because a small town with a big vision can make an impact far beyond its borders.
