A Defining Moment for Purpose-Driven Leadership

When Mayor Derrick R. Wood stood in Ghana to receive international recognition for leadership and community impact, the moment represented more than an award—it marked a shift.

What began as local work in Dumfries, Virginia, is now being recognized on a global stage.

During a recent visit to Accra, Ghana, Mayor Wood and the Derrick Wood Foundation received multiple international honors, including:

  • Citation of Honor and Appreciation (Lovor Quest Club)
  • Obrempong Award for Leadership and Community Impact
  • Kwame Nkrumah Award for Pan-African Leadership
  • Recognition from Inspired Women Conference 2026

While the recognitions are significant, the message behind them is greater.

“This isn’t about a title—it’s about impact. What we’re building in Dumfries is proof that when leadership is rooted in purpose, it can travel anywhere.”

Dumfries Connection

Under Mayor Wood’s leadership, Dumfries is transforming from a pass-through corridor into a destination community—focused on economic development, infrastructure investment, civic engagement, and leadership cultivation.

This model is now gaining international attention.

Through the Derrick Wood Foundation, this work extends beyond borders through:

  • Youth mentorship and leadership development
  • Cultural and educational exchange experiences
  • Community-based initiatives

Global Connection

The Ghana visit created opportunities to strengthen connections between Dumfries and communities across Africa, opening doors for future partnerships in education, leadership development, and sustainable initiatives.
