Mayor Derrick Wood Comments
Good evening everyone, and thank you for being here and staying engaged in the life of our town.
As we step into June, I want to begin by saying congratulations to all of our recent high school and college graduates! Whether you’re stepping into the workforce, continuing your education, or still figuring out what’s next—know that we are proud of you. Your journey is just beginning, and your future is as bright as your belief in it.
I also want to invite each of you to join us this Thursday evening for the 2025 State of the Town Address. This year’s theme is “A Thriving Dumfries: Progress, Partnerships, and Possibilities.” It’s not just about what’s been done—it’s about the possibilities we’re unlocking together. From economic development and clean audits to growing community events and infrastructure wins, we're writing a new chapter in Dumfries history.
We’d be remiss tonight not to honor the life and legacy of Congressman Gerry Connolly. He was more than a representative—he was a friend to our town. He believed in small-town leadership, and he believed in us. His unwavering support for Dumfries will always be remembered, and his example challenges all of us to lead with purpose and humility.
As summer kicks off, so do many exciting opportunities to connect. From Juneteenth and Father’s Day celebrations to our vibrant event schedule and youth programs, there’s something for everyone. I encourage you to lean in, participate, and invite a neighbor along.
And if you’ve ever thought, “How can I make a difference?”—here’s how: apply to serve on one of our town’s boards or commissions. Whether it’s planning, economic development, or community events, we need your voice at the table. Head to our website and get involved. Dumfries doesn’t just grow from the top down—it thrives from the inside out, powered by residents like you.
I’ll leave you with this month’s food for thought:
“Your only competition is who you were yesterday. Be better than that version of yourself, every single day.”
Let’s keep building. Let’s keep dreaming. And let’s continue showing the region what it means to Rediscover Dumfries.
Thank you, and I’ll see you Thursday night.
I encourage you to connect with me about any questions, suggestions, or feedback you may have. Your perspective is vital in creating a thriving Dumfries. Let’s work hand in hand to ensure our town continues to flourish.
