A Grocery Store Is More Than a Grocery Store. Here’s What It Means for Dumfries.

October 13, 2026 | By Mayor Derrick Wood
When people hear that a new grocery store is being planned, they might think about convenience: a shorter trip for groceries, a place to pick up dinner, or one more shopping option close to home.
I think about those things, too. But I also think about what that kind of investment says about our community—and what it can make possible next.
At our October 6, 2026 Town Council meeting, we unanimously approved additional land-use applications related to a proposed grocery-anchored commercial development on Old Stage Coach Road. The Council had already approved the property’s rezoning on September 15.
The proposal from Bridgeline Development Group involves approximately 15.33 acres at 17439 and 17471 Old Stage Coach Road and includes a roughly 50,325-square-foot grocery store, about 6,700 square feet of additional retail space, and a drive-through pharmacy.
This is a meaningful step forward. But it is important to be clear about what it means: approval of land-use applications is not the same as a store opening. There are still development, permitting, construction, and business decisions ahead. And while there has been speculation about the grocer, the operator has not been officially confirmed.
Why a Grocery Store Matters
A grocery store is more than a building full of products.
For a family, it can mean saving time on a routine errand. For a senior, it can mean convenient access to food and pharmacy services. For a neighborhood, it can create new reasons for people to shop close to home.
It can also attract other useful businesses, create jobs, and add commercial activity that strengthens the local economy.
That is why I look at projects like this through a bigger lens. We should ask not just what gets built, but who benefits from it—and how its benefits spread through the community.
Development Should Create Opportunity
Growth matters, but growth alone is not the goal.
I want Dumfries residents to see opportunities to work, start businesses, build careers, and participate in the economic activity coming into our town. As this development moves forward, we should keep paying attention to job access, local business opportunities, safe access to the site, and how it complements the neighborhoods around it.
A strong community doesn’t just welcome investment. It works to turn investment into opportunity for the people already here.
Building Destination Dumfries
For years, we’ve talked about building Destination Dumfries—a place people intentionally drive to, not simply drive through.
That vision is about more than visitor attractions or major developments. It is also about having the everyday services that make a community stronger and more livable.
A grocery-anchored center can help fill that role. Together with our infrastructure work, redevelopment plans, local entrepreneurs, historic assets, and other investments, it becomes one part of a broader transformation.
No single project will define our future. But each responsible step can help build the Dumfries our residents deserve.
The Work Ahead
I’m encouraged by the Council’s unanimous support for moving this proposal forward. I also know that residents will judge progress by what they can actually see, use, and benefit from.
That means staying engaged as plans advance, asking good questions, and working to make sure development translates into lasting value.
A grocery store may be the headline today.
The bigger story is a town positioning itself for more choices, more opportunity, and a stronger future.
That’s the work of taking Dumfries from overlooked to unforgettable.
