At the heart of every thriving community is a rising leader — and this month, that leader is Saniyah Brooks.

We are proud to honor Saniyah as our September Mentee of the Month for the Mayor’s Youth Mentorship Program. From Day 1, Saniyah has demonstrated the kind of initiative, drive, and thoughtfulness that make a lasting impact. She’s consistently completed her assignments, remained actively engaged in our sessions, and contributed ideas that reflect both heart and strategy.

As a high school student with a passion for law, journalism, and public service, Saniyah is already carving a powerful path for her future. Her dream is to become an attorney — and perhaps one day, pursue a career in journalism or politics. Through this mentorship program, she shared:

“My goal for joining the Mayor Woods Youth Mentorship Program is to grow as a leader, gain guidance from experienced mentors, and better understand how I can make a lasting impact in my community. As I prepare for college and a future in law and public service, I want to build meaningful connections, strengthen my voice, and learn from those who are actively creating change.”

And that’s exactly what she’s doing.

In her first assignment, Saniyah tackled a critical issue facing her generation:

The lack of access to mental health resources for teens.

“Many young people face daily stressors — academic pressure, social challenges, family issues — without adequate support. I would implement peer-led support groups in schools, partner with local mental health counselors for workshops, and establish a community hotline for teens. These systems can foster a healthier, more resilient generation.”

Her response wasn’t just a thoughtful analysis — it was a clear, proactive plan rooted in empathy and community. As the daughter of a mental health counselor, Saniyah brings unique insight and conviction to the conversation, proving she’s not just thinking about problems — she’s committed to solving them.

🎉 As part of her recognition, Saniyah will receive a $25 gift card, a small token of appreciation for the big impact she’s already making as a young changemaker.
