Building a Team to Finish the Work in Dumfries
By. Mayor Derrick R. Wood
Local, county, state and federal leaders joined community members for a coordinated campaign gathering that reflected something I have learned throughout my time in public service: real progress takes a team.
Recently, we brought together supporters, community members, Democratic leaders, and elected officials from across our region for our coordinated campaign launch in Dumfries.
Congressman Eugene Vindman joined us, along with Senator Jeremy McPike, Prince William County School Board Member Justin Wilk, Dumfries Councilmembers Russell Young and Sean Peete, members of the Potomac Democratic Committee, and community members from across the area.
The Co-Chair of the Potomac Democratic Committee served as our MC, and the Prince William County Democratic community has continued to show strong support for its endorsed candidates.
Several supporters who couldn't attend also supported the gathering, including Prince William County Supervisor Andrea Bailey, Prince William County Board of Supervisors Chairman Luke Torian, and Delegate Franklin.
I appreciated every person who attended or supported the event.
But what stayed with me wasn't simply who was in the room.
It was what the room represented.
Transformation Takes a Team
I've served Dumfries since winning my first election as a write-in candidate for Town Council in 2012 and have had the honor of serving as Mayor since 2018.
One lesson has become clearer every year:
No mayor transforms a town alone.
Progress requires a Council willing to work.
Professional staff who turn ideas into execution.
Residents who participate and hold their government accountable.
Businesses willing to invest.
Community organizations willing to serve.
And relationships with county, state, and federal leaders who can help a small community compete for bigger opportunities.
That is why relationships matter to me.
Not because of who you can stand beside for a photograph.
Relationships matter because of what they can make possible for the people you serve.
Dumfries Is Different Today
When I first entered elected office, I believed Dumfries had more potential than people could see.
Today, we're seeing that potential become real.
Dumfries has attracted significant private investment and hundreds of jobs.
We've strengthened the Town's financial position and earned our first-ever municipal credit ratings.
Major transportation and infrastructure investments are moving forward.
We're planning for the future of our waterfront.
We're investing in recreation, environmental restoration, public spaces, and quality of life.
And we're continuing to build toward the vision we call:
Destination Dumfries
A community people drive to, not through.
Those accomplishments matter.
But there is still work to finish.
The Next Chapter Has to Be About People
Growth alone isn't enough.
The question I increasingly ask is:
Who benefits when Dumfries becomes more valuable?
I want the answer to include the people who already call this community home.
That means connecting growth to better jobs, higher incomes, entrepreneurship, homeownership, workforce development, leadership opportunities, and pathways to building wealth.
I don't want residents simply living near prosperity.
I want them participating in it.
That's what I mean when I talk about helping people grow in place.
We can welcome investment while protecting the character of our community.
We can grow while still knowing our neighbors.
We can build new things while respecting our history.
And we can increase the value of Dumfries while creating opportunities for the people who helped make this community valuable in the first place.
Building the Team
That's also why the idea of a coordinated campaign matters to me.
It isn't about everyone thinking exactly alike.
Strong teams don't.
It's about people being able to bring different experiences and perspectives to the table while still recognizing that the work is bigger than any one person.
The gathering brought together people serving at different levels of government and people who don't hold elected office at all.
Federal.
State.
County.
Town.
Community.
Different roles, but a shared connection to Dumfries and Prince William County.
For a small town, those relationships can be powerful.
They can help connect Dumfries to ideas, expertise, partnerships, resources, and opportunities that would be difficult to create alone.
Finishing the Work
I'm proud of how far Dumfries has come.
But I'm more interested in where we're going.
There are projects underway that need to be completed.
There are opportunities we haven't captured yet.
There are businesses that haven't been started.
There are young people whose leadership hasn't been developed.
There are families who should have a greater opportunity to build wealth.
And there are still people driving past Dumfries who don't yet know what is being built here.
That's why this moment isn't simply about looking back at what we've accomplished.
It's about building the team capable of finishing the work ahead.
To Congressman Vindman, Senator McPike, School Board Member Justin Wilk, Councilmembers Russell Young and Sean Peete, the Potomac Democrats, Supervisor Andrea Bailey, Chairman Luke Torian, Delegate Franklin, our community members, supporters, volunteers, and everyone who continues to believe in Dumfries:
Thank you.
The work we've done together has changed what people believe is possible for this town.
Now comes the next chapter.
Building the relationships. Developing the people. Creating the opportunities. And finishing the work in Dumfries.
