Mayor’s Comments for Feb 2025 Council Meeting

Good evening, everyone.

Before we begin, I want to take a moment of silence to honor the lives lost in the recent plane crash. Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones impacted by this tragedy. May they find strength and comfort during this difficult time.

As we enter February, we recognize and celebrate Black History Month. This year’s theme reminds us of the resilience, achievements, and contributions of African Americans throughout history. I invite everyone to join us for our Black History Program on Sunday, February 23, at 12:30 PM at Little Union Baptist Church. This will be a time of reflection, education, and celebration of the culture and history that continue to shape our nation.

Reflecting on a Productive January

Last month was filled with opportunities to represent Dumfries and advocate for our community at various forums, summits, and legislative meetings.

At the National League of Cities Housing Summit, the focus was on creating affordable housing and rental options. The biggest takeaway was clear—to drive down housing costs, we must increase inventory. That means we need to explore ways to increase density while ensuring thoughtful and sustainable growth in our town.

At the Regional African American Mayors Roundtable, we strategized on how we, as mayors, can ensure our voices are heard at the federal level to bring much-needed resources back to our communities. These conversations are critical to making sure towns like Dumfries are considered in funding and policy decisions.

The U.S. Conference of Mayors reinforced the importance of public-private partnerships (P3s)—a key strategy as we look to develop a thriving downtown district. Building strong relationships between government and private entities will be essential for our town’s economic growth, attracting businesses, and creating a vibrant, sustainable community.

I also had the opportunity to attend the State of the County Forum, hosted by Chair Deshundra Jefferson, and the State of the Potomac District Forum, hosted by Supervisor Andrea Bailey. Both events provided valuable insights into regional priorities and how Dumfries fits into the broader vision for Prince William County. These forums reaffirmed the importance of collaboration at the local level to ensure our town benefits from countywide initiatives and resources.

Additionally, I traveled several times to the Virginia General Assembly alongside our Town Manager, the Prince William County Chamber of Commerce, and the Virginia Municipal League. We engaged with state elected officials to share our vision for Dumfries—a town with a well-managed government, engaged citizens, and a thriving downtown. Achieving this vision requires state support, and we will continue advocating for the resources necessary to move our town forward. Showing up ensures our voice is heard.

Financial Stewardship & Policy Updates

I’m also pleased to report that our clean fiscal audit is a testament to the financial responsibility and transparency we uphold as a government. Furthermore, I have spoken with our Town Attorney and Town Manager about bringing forward an update to our real estate tax code to align with the state and provide much-needed relief for our senior citizens and disabled homeowners. Ensuring financial stability for these residents is a priority, and we are actively working toward solutions that will ease their burdens.

Recognitions & Closing Thoughts

On a personal note, I was honored to receive a 10 Years of Service Award from the Boys & Girls Club. Investing in our youth is one of the most rewarding aspects of public service, and I remain committed to helping create pathways to success for the next generation.

As we move forward, I want to leave you with this thought: Our perspective of the world and our environment is shaped by our experiences, but there are always multiple perspectives to consider.

I was reminded of this during our swearing-in ceremony, reflecting on the number of people who don’t just drive through Dumfries, but drive to Dumfries. That distinction is important because it speaks to the impact of the work we are doing. It is a testament to the viability of your council and its ability to bring people back to this town—whether for community events, business opportunities, or civic engagement. Dumfries is not just a stop along the way—it is a destination, and together, we will continue to build on that momentum.

Happy Valentines, and I am looking forward to celebrating my 25th Wedding Anniverasay

Thank you.
